Imagine this: Your grandmother lives in the country and keeps a cow. One day, somehow, this cow kicks her quite viciously in the shoulder.
This is of course a very unlucky and painful accident. But generally, we would assume that your grandmother would call her doctor or an ambulance, and, within a relatively short time, would get all the medical attention she needed to recover as quickly and fully as possible.
Well, things could be a little bit different if your grandmother lived in the jungle of Central India.

In these isolated and very traditionally minded communities, injuries are often not treated properly.
In the case of 60 year old Mrs. Rana, who was injured by her cow, this could have caused many complications, right down to her losing the use of her left arm.
Many other people lose limbs or are crippled in other ways from "simple" injuries such as falling from a cart.
If a wound is involved it is not uncommon for patients to die of infections, so even seemingly harmless injuries can potentially be life-threatening.

Luckily, Mrs. Rana lives in the catchment area of The Tulsi Trust's medical team. After having been treated without success by her shaman for a month, some of her neighbours informed our team.
As a result, our doctor was able to determine that her shoulder was broken, and to administer the proper care to look after the injury and keep Mrs. Rana's pain manageable, until she can be taken to hospital for surgery.

You wouldn't expect your grandmother to suffer in pain and with a useless arm - so why not look after somebody else's grandmother, too!?
